Annapolis, MD - The women's basketball team defeated Navy, 65-59, on Thursday, Jan. 8, for its fourth straight victory. The Bears are now 6-6 on the season. Senior Nyema Mitchell, now just four points away from reaching 1,000 for her career, led Brown with 22 points.
Navy set the tempo at the start of the game, taking a quick 6-0 lead in the opening minutes. Navy senior Courtney Davidson hit two straight three's, helping the Mids to a 19-10 advantage, as Brown failed to get its offense going.
The Bears eventually got into a groove while Navy went cold, leading to a 14-2 Brown run. Senior Tanara Golston drove the paint and found Mitchell near the basket for an open lay-up to cut the lead to one at the 9:31 mark. Junior Holly Robertson's scoop shot 44 seconds later gave the Bears their first lead of the game.
Navy would fight its way back, forcing Brown into some difficult shots, to regain the lead, 29-26, by the end of the half. Sophomore Sarah Hayes ruled the boards, recording nine in the half along with five points. Mitchell led all Brown players with eight points.
The Mids upped their lead to nine with 12 minutes left to play in the game as they opened up the second half strong. Senior Adrienne Roseti posted six of Navy's 17 points on that stretch. The aggressive play of Golston helped get Brown back into the game as she created several scoring opportunities for the Bears.
Mitchell came up huge for Brown in the half, posting 14 points, including four clutch free throws in the final minutes. Sophomore Colleen Kelly was also a key component to the victory as she hit for a season-high 17 points, including four in the final minute of play.
Hayes recorded a career-high 13 rebounds, while Golston tied her career-high with 10 assists.
Brown will open up the Ivy League season on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Yale starting at 7 p.m.
