PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior guard Shayna Mehta scored a game-high 18 points, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Ivy League leading Princeton University, 79-44, on Friday night at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Bears (15-11, 3-10 Ivy) faced a 20-4 deficit in the first quarter and trailed 46-23 at halftime as the Tigers (21-5, 11-2 Ivy) remained in first place in the Ivy League standings and clinched a share of the conference's regular season title.
Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) posted her 18 points on 6-of-15 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws. She now has 1,278 career points, ninth-most at Brown, and 468 points on the season, the eighth-most in a single season at Brown.
Freshman guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) netted nine points – her season high in Ivy play – on 4-of-6 shooting. Senior forward Janie White grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and sophomore center Lames ElGammal (Baldwin, N.Y.) corralled a career-high six rebounds.
Making the start, senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) played in her 110th career game, tying for the most career games played in Brown history.
For Princeton, Leslie Robinson posted a triple-double on 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists while Abby Meyers scored 18 points, and Bella Alarie netted 13 points. The Tigers held Brown to 26.2-percent shooting for the game.
After a baseline jumper from White made the score 7-2, the Tigers used a 13-2 run to pull ahead 20-4 with 3:34 to go in the first quarter. A long 3-pointer from Mehta helped keep Brown within 23-7 at the end of one.
Baskets from Dale and junior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) made the score 29-11 early in the second quarter. Mehta scored the Bears' next eight points, including three mid-range jumpers, as Brown trailed 40-19. Despite a fast break layup from sophomore guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.), the Bears faced a 46-23 deficit at the break.
Dale netted five points in the third quarter, bringing Brown within 53-31 on a 3-pointer at the 5:14 mark of the frame. A 20-foot jumper from Mehta just before the end of the stanza trimmed Brown's deficit to 64-33 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, sophomore guard Randi Richardson (Flint, Mich.), freshman center Jenna Benzinger (Williamstown, Mass.), and freshman forward Savannah Lewis (Westlake Village, Calif.) all scored for the Bears.
Next, Brown closes its regular season at Penn tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 3, at 6:00 p.m. (ILN).
