HANOVER, N.H. – Junior guard Shayna Mehta scored a game-high 25 points and moved into 12th place on the Bears' career scoring list, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Dartmouth College, 78-73, on Friday night at Leede Arena.
The Bears (13-3, 1-2 Ivy) took a 66-57 lead with 8:22 remaining, but the host Big Green (10-6, 2-1 Ivy) outscored the visitors 21-7 over the duration of the game to improve to 7-1 at home this season.
Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) made 9-of-18 shots from inside the 3-point arc as part of her 25-point effort – her sixth 20-point game this season and the 19th of her career. She added five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.
Mehta increased her career point total to 1,098 points, moving into 12th place on Brown's career scoring list and passing Colleen Kelly '06 and Michelle Pagliaro '94. She hit two 3-pointers to move into third place in the Brown record book with 171 career made 3-pointers, passing Kelly.
Junior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) totaled 16 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. She made 6-of-10 shots from the floor and 3-of-6 shots from 3-point distance to score in double figures for the 10th time this season and 39th time in her career.
Sophomore guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted 18 points with four assists for her 14th double-figure game of the season and 35th of her career. Senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and junior forward Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) added five boards.
The game witnessed five ties and 14 lead changes, including three ties and nine lead changes in the second half. Brown held advantages in points in the paint (26-16) and points off turnovers (17-7), but the Big Green shot 48.4 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc. Dartmouth hit 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) shots and 6-of-8 shots from distance in the second half.
The Bears took a 44-35 lead out of the break following an up-and-under basket from Butler and a steal and score from Mehta. The Big Green responded with a 14-0 run to gain a 49-44 edge at the 5:56 mark of the third quarter. A 6-0 run from Brown put the Bears back up 52-51 with 3:50 left in the frame. Driving layups from Steeves and freshman guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and a 3-pointer from Mehta helped keep Brown up 59-57 heading to the fourth quarter.
Brown opened the fourth quarter with seven consecutive points as Steeves hit a 3-pointer and Leonidas and Gaziano both made layups, giving Brown a 66-57 advantage with 8:22 left. Dartmouth answered with a 9-0 streak to tie it at 66-66 with 6:30 to go. A 3-pointer from Steeves and a layup from Gaziano lifted Brown to a 73-72 lead with 3:18 left, but Dartmouth scored the final six points of the game.
After Dartmouth took an early 5-0 lead, Brown responded with eight straight points as freshman guard McKenna Dale (Storrs, Conn.) and Gaziano both hit 3-pointers and Gaziano made a jump shot. Mehta scored six of Brown's next nine points as the two teams remained tied at 17-17 with 1:11 left in the first quarter. Layups from Steeves and Gaziano pushed Brown ahead 21-20 at the end of one.
Mehta opened the second quarter with a steal and score before the Bears used a 12-4 spurt later in the stanza to pull ahead 35-26 with 4:30 to go until halftime. During the run, senior guard Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) – playing in her 100th career game – and Gaziano each connected on a 3-pointer while Mehta and Steeves both converted old-fashioned 3-point plays. After Dartmouth scored seven straight points, Mehta knocked down a trey at the halftime buzzer to give the visitors a 38-33 edge at the break.
For Dartmouth, Cy Lippold (19 points, 10 assists) and Olivia Smith (15 points, 12 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. The Big Green tallied five double-figure scorers as Isalys Quinones, Emily Slagle, and Kate Letkewicz netted 15, 13, and 12 points respectively.
Next, Brown closes the weekend at Harvard tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 27, at 4:00 p.m. (NESN/ILN).
