Five Highlights from Women’s Hoops’ Reilly’s Summer with the NBA

Brown University women's basketball rising senior captain Megan Reilly spent her summer in New York City interning for the NBA G League's Business Operations team. Her responsibilities included assisting with a marketing rebrand campaign, developing licensee contract overviews for merchandise deals, executing player appearance events, and collaborating with other interns to present potential partners for a new entity called the NBA 2K League. The Norwood, N.J., native gave the starting five highlights of her experience.

After growing up playing basketball and watching the NBA on TV, seeing how the league runs behind the scenes gave me a new perspective of the game. It was a great learning experience, and I had an absolute blast. Here are some of the highlights:

No. 5: NBA Draft at Barclays Center, Brooklyn
A few hours before the draft began, the interns directed fans around the stadium and took pictures for people in front of the huge 2017 NBA Draft sign. Once that ended, we got a ticket to go inside and enjoy the show. The atmosphere inside of Barclays was electric with TV cameras and NBA superstars everywhere. When the cameras weren't rolling, I watched the NBA rookies interact with their families. And I wasn't the only one spending most of my night watching Lonzo Ball and his family since the media was all over them.

No. 4: NBA Summer League, Las Vegas
In the weeks leading up to the summer league games, I worked with my team to plan a welcome reception for 100-plus guests, including NBA G League team presidents and retired players. When we got to Las Vegas, I spent the first day scoping out the event space, meeting with the managers of the venue and making sure everything was all set for the reception the following evening. Once the space was ready to go, I headed to the Thomas & Mack Center to the summer league games. I got a glimpse of head coaches, Gregg Popovich, Brad Stevens, and Steve Kerr, and took a selfie with Phoenix Suns guard, Tyler Ulis.

No. 3: Seeing Steven Spieth '17 Play
During my 48 hours in Las Vegas, I watched several games, including the Warriors match-up against the Timberwolves and the Celtics against the 76ers. But the highlight for me was seeing Brown basketball alumnus Steven Spieth '17 of the Dallas Mavericks summer league team compete against the Miami Heat.

No. 2: Commissioner's Forum
The interns were really surprised when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver took time to speak to us and answer our questions. He talked about his journey to the NBA from Duke to University of Chicago Law School to being an assistant to the former commissioner. Interns asked him his opinion about the technologies driving innovation such as wearable technology and motion sensors, and he said that this is basically going to be the future of the league. When asked about international expansion, he said that this is something they are working towards on a daily basis.
