PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's basketball rising junior Erika Steeves has earned an invitation to attend Canada Basketball's Development Women's National Team Tryouts and Training Camp from July 29 to August 8, Canada Basketball announced on Thursday.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Steeves stands as one of 18 athletes invited by Canada Basketball's Women's High Performance program to compete for a spot on a final roster that will compete at the 2017 U24 Women's Basketball Four Nations League in Tokyo from August 12-15 and at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei from August 20-29.
Canada Basketball will play Japan (Aug. 12), the United States (Aug. 13), and Australia (Aug. 15) while in Tokyo. The team will face Portugal (Aug. 21), South Korea (Aug. 22), and Japan (Aug. 23) in the group stage of the World University Games, the 29th Summer Universiade.
A captain for the Bears this upcoming season, Steeves enters the 2017-18 campaign with 28 career double-figure scoring games and nine career double-doubles. This past winter she earned a spot on the inaugural Ivy League All-Tournament Team and gained CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Steeves ranked eighth in the Ivy League in points per game (12.9), fourth in rebounds per game (8.4), and first in defensive rebounds per game (7.1).
Earlier this summer, Steeves spent 23 days in China from June 13 to July 5, exploring the market for amateur and professional basketball in China through a Brown Royce Sport and Society Fellowship.
In 2016-17, she helped the Bears qualify for the inaugural Ivy League Tournament and secure a spot in the Women's Basketball Invitational, gaining the program's first-ever win in a national postseason tournament. This past winter Brown set single-season program records for games played (30), points (2,169), field goals made (779), 3-pointers made (226), and free throw percentage (.739).
