Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short at Army, 67-65

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite closing the game on a 29-12 run, the Brown women's basketball team's comeback bid fell just short in a 67-65 defeat at Army on Saturday.

Reigning Ivy League Co-Player of the Week, Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.), and co-captain Lauren Clarke combined for 16 and 19 points respectively for the Bears.  Kelsey Minato led the Black Knights with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field.

Bikofsky continued her success from behind the arc, tallying treys on four of five attempts.  Clarke's strong drives to the hoop resulted in 7-of-14 from the field and seven attempts from the line.

Senior Sophie Beutel (Toronto, Ont.) led Brown on the glass, gathering six rebounds as the Bears totaled a season-best 13 offensive boards.

Sophomore guard Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) recorded nine points and was 5-of-7 from the line to lead the team.

Much like Wednesday's game at Bryant, the Bears got off to slow start as the Black Knights ran out to an 11-point lead just eight minutes in.  Brown began to claw its way back, lead by Carly Wellington's career-high (Lake Oswego, Ore.) 10 points, including two treys.

After getting into the bonus early in the half, the Bears went to the charity stripe 15 times while converting on 10 to aid in cutting the deficit to five at the half.

Army extended its lead to 17 points to open half as the Bears shooting struggled, going 1-for-11 from the field before their run.  Treys from Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, Mass.) and Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, N.J.) on three consecutive possessions cut the deficit to under 10.

The Bears continued to inch their way back and finally grabbed their first lead of the game on Bikofsky's trey with 1:49 remaining.

With the game knotted at 65 in the waning moments, Jen Hazlett's put back with 1.5 seconds on the clock gave the Black Knights the win. Bikofsky's desperation heave fell short as time expired to nearly cap a tremendous rally.

Brown drops to 2-2 on the season and will return to action next Saturday against Navy.
