JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Sophie Bikofsky's (Newton, Mass.) career-high 23 points proved to be the difference as the Brown women's basketball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 64-52 win over Saint Peter's on Saturday at the Yanitelli Center.
The junior guard went 8-for-11 from the field including six treys as she eclipsed her previous high in points of 21 set against Cornell on Feb. 16, 2013. Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) and senior co-captain Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, N.J.) both recorded double figures in scoring for the second consecutive game. Alexander continues to be perfect from the line this season, going 6-for-6 on Saturday and 9-for-9 overall in 2013-14.
After allowing the first seven points of the game, the Bears caught fire as they went on a 17-3 run midway through the first half to take a seven point lead. Thanks to six treys in the first 20 minutes, the Bears were able to up their lead to 13 at the half.
The Bears and Peacocks slugged it out evenly in the second half, but Bikofsky's 13 points in the final 20 minutes dispelled any hope of a Saint Peter's comeback. The Bears' defense and ability to answer on the offensive end prevented the Peacocks from cutting the deficit to anything less than 11 points in the second half.
Brown got strong performances from freshmen Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) and KJ Veldman (Spirit Lake, Iowa). Musgrove recorded four points and a team-best five steals and four assists in 31 minutes of action while Veldman notched six points and four rebounds in just 16 minutes.
Antonia Smith, Kaydine Bent, Aziza May, and Hala Mostafa each recorded double figures in points for the host Peacocks as they dropped to 0-2 this season.
The Bears will battle Ocean State rival, Bryant, on Wednesday night in the second of their five game road trip.
