ITHICA, NEW YORK – Battling back from multiple double-digit deficits, the Brown women's basketball team (7-15, 1-7 Ivy League) held a 58-53 lead over Cornell (11-9, 3-3 Ivy League) with two minutes left in the game. However, the Big Red would score the final seven points of the game ending the Bears' comeback bid, posting a 60-58 victory.
Senior Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) ended Cornell's opening 8-0 run with a layup 1:50 into the game. After senior Caroline King (Valencia, PA) added a layup of her own, Cornell would extend its lead to 17-4. Sophomore guard Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, MA) then caught fire hitting three three-pointers. Dixon added two jumpers and freshman Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, OH) hit one as well and a 15-2 run by the Bears tied the game at 19-19.
The Big Red then scored ten straight points pushing their lead to 29-19 with 5:25 remaining in the half. Dixon and Bikofsky would combine to score the Bear's final seven points of the half. Brown headed to the locker room, down 33-26.
A King layup opened the second half scoring and reduced the Big Red lead to five. Cornell would again extend its lead to 10 before sophomore Maddy Page (Irvine, CA) scored a layup, making the score 38-30. Two more three pointers from Bikofsky brought the Bears to within two. Brown would tie the game at 40-40 on a Dixon layup with 10:16 left in the half. The two teams traded baskets until a pair of free throws by junior Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) tied the game at 50-50.
Clarke would make another trip to the free-throw line and give Brown its first lead of the game at 52-50. A Big Red three pointer temporarily returned the lead to Cornell. However, the Bears would respond with a Page layup, two additional Clarke free throws, and a Dixon jumper, giving Brown a 58-53 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
Bikofsky led the Bears in scoring with 21 points. Dixon added 17 points for the second consecutive night. Clarke, Page, King, and Sharpe added eight, six, four, and two points respectively. Bikofsky also lead the Bears with nine rebounds while Dixon corralled seven of her own and added six assists.
The Bears continue their four-game road trip, travelling to Harvard and Dartmouth for a pair of Ivy League contests next weekend. Brown will face Harvard on Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
