College Park, Md. – Maryland's Tianna Hawkins poured in 20 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the field to lead the No. 9 Terrapins to a 76-36 victory over the visiting Brown women's basketball team in the first round of the Terrapin Classic. The Bears will now play either Hartford or UMES at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the consolation game.
Junior point guard Lauren Clarke led the Brown offense with eight points, followed by sophomore Sophie Bikofsky and senior Sheila Dixon, each with five. Junior forward Sophie Beutel brought down a team-high four rebounds.
Maryland used 55 percent shooting in the first half to gain a 37-24 lead over the visiting Bears. The Terrapins held Brown to 33 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, as Clarke led Brown with eight points.
Six minutes into the final half, the Bears cut their deficit to 12 points after Beutel knocked in two free throws, but Maryland used a 19-0 run to lead 62-31 over the next eight minutes. A three pointer by Nelly Weledji finally broke the silence with 5:54 left in the game.
The hot-shooting Terrapins, who went 55 percent from the field, continued to roll, extending their lead to 76-36 to end the game.
Maryland bested the Bears on the boards, 43-24, and held Brown to just 17 percent shooting in the second half for 26 percent shooting for the game.
Behind Hawkins' game-high 20 points, Alyssa Thomas added 16 points and eight rebounds and Katie Rutan combined for 11.
