Providence, RI- The Brown women's basketball team will host its 21st annual Brown Bear Basketball Classic on December 1st and 2nd at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The four-team tournament features the Rider Broncs (2-3), the UNH Wildcats (3-2), and the Quinnipiac Bobcats (4-0). The Bears (2-4) and Rider kick off the tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, followed by Quinnipiac and UNH at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Brown will take on either Quinnipiac or New Hampshire at 4 p.m. Live stats will be provided for all games, and video will be available (for a fee) for the Brown games.
Earlier this week, Brown suffered an 81-58 loss to the visiting Bryant Bulldogs. Both junior point guard Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) and sophomore guard Sophie Bikofsky (Newton, MA) contributed to the Bears' offense, adding 16 and 14 points apiece, however the team couldn't match the Bulldogs' pace on the day.
Rider enters the weekend with a recent win over Lafayette (68-64). Team-leader Sironda Chambers (Newark, Del.) led the offense against Lafayette with 24 points, and is averaging 15 points per game. The Broncs have been averaging 58 points a game. Rider returned nine letterwinners, including four starters, from a team that finished 11-19 overall and 3-15 in the MAAC last season.
Brown and Rider are meeting for just the third time, as Brown leads the all-time series, 2-0. In the last Brown vs. Rider matchup in 1998, the Bears defeated Rider, 73-60, in the consolation game of the ECAC Holiday Festival. The Broncs had a 10-point lead early on, but the Bears roared back with a 20-0 run and went on to earn the 13-point victory.
Quinnipiac's squad has snagged four wins, competing against James Madison, Massachusetts, URI, and most recently against Yale on the road. The Bobcats are averaging 77 points per game and 41 rebounds per game, and hold the 22nd rank in the College Insider Top 25 Mid-Major Poll. Quinnipiac remains on the College Insider Top 25 Mid-Major Polls, ranked at No. 22. Senior Felicia Barron led the Bobcats in scoring this past week against Yale, combining for 16 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor.
UNH heads into the Classic off of a 63-44 loss to Harvard on Nov 28th, their second loss of the season. Senior guard Cari Reed paced the Wildcats with ten points, six rebounds, and four assists. The squad has claimed victories so far over Yale, Holy Cross, and Cornell, and is making its second appearance in the Brown BEAR Classic.
