Bears Drop Heartbreaker to Pitt, 58-57

Pittsburgh, PA – Pittsburgh junior Abby Dowd drained a three pointer with just nine seconds remaining in the game to lead the Pittsburgh Panthers (4-1) to a 58-57 victory over the visiting Brown women's basketball team (2-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Peterson Events Center.

Junior Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) led the Brown offense with 20 points and six rebounds, followed by both Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) and rookie Jordin Alexander (Fishers, IN) with 11 each.   Also, senior captain Caroline King (Valencia, PA) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in front of her hometown crowd.

The Bears held a lead throughout much of the game, including a 12-point advantage eight minutes in, and a four-point edge at halftime.  After the intermission, the Panthers regained the lead on three different occasions, including Pitt's game-winning three with nine seconds remaining in the game.

Brown came out of the pre-game huddle with intensity and poise against the Big East's Pittsburgh Panthers.  The Bears built a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, as their 2-3 defense stymied the Pitt offense holding the squad to just 25 percent shooting from the field.

After a three-pointer by Alexander, Brown went ahead by 12 points, 14-2, but Pitt began to chip away at its deficit as a trey by Abby Dowd brought her team within seven just under six minutes remaining in the half.  Pitt closed out the stanza with two free throws by Asia Logan to put the score at 26-22.

Pitt forced Brown into three turnovers to start the second half, bringing the Panthers within one, 27-26, in the first four minutes. However, Brown went on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to extend its lead back up to nine with 14:51 on the clock.

Pitt's Ashley Anderson scored eight straight points to give the Panthers their first lead of the afternoon, 44-43, with 8:51 remaining in the game.  Brown turned around and went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to regain a nine-point advantage with 6:26 to go in the game.

Another run by Pitt, which included a free throw by Asia Logan and a jumper by Anderson, cut its deficit to three with 2:03 on the clock.   Anderson followed with a free throw with 45 seconds left, and with just nine seconds remaining in the game Dowd nailed a three pointer to lift the Panthers to a 58-57 victory over the Bears.

Pitt's Anderson ended the night with 16 points, seven boards and four assists, while Chyna Golden added 10 points.  Dowd, who hit the winning trey, added nine points, including a 3-of-8 mark from beyond the arc.

The Bears will now host Bryant at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
