Fairfield, Conn. - Fairfield's Katie Cizynski earned a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the women's basketball team to a 49-34 defeat over the Bears on Tuesday evening at Alumni Hall. The loss drops Brown to 1-1 on the young season, while Fairfield improves to 1-1.
Brown, led by Sheila Dixon's (Schenectady, NY) 15 points and six rebounds, got off to a slow start as Fairfield tallied the first five points of the game. The Bears, trailing 9-5 just six minutes into the half, allowed Fairfield to go on a 15-3 run over a four-minutes span to take a 24-8 advantage.
Junior Jordin Juker (Boise, ID) broke the silence with a layup with 10:05 remaining in the first half, and a three pointer by Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, OH) cut the deficit to 10. However, the Stags closed out the stanza on a 6-2 run to head into halftime with a 33-19 lead.
Despite shooting just 23 percent in the second half, Brown picked up its defensive pressure and was able to hold the Stags to 16 second-half points.
Dixon fired off the first shot of the second half to cut Brown's deficit to 33-21, but Fairfield went on a 7-0 run to earn a 19-point lead with 13:29 remaining. Brittany MacFarlane drained a three at 12:15 to give Fairfield its largest lead of the night, but the Bears finished the game on a 9-2 run to fall short, 49-34.
Juker finished the game with four points, followed by Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ) with three points and three rebounds.
Fairfield's Katelyn Linney added 13 points and six rebounds for the Stags and Brittany MacFarlane posted seven points and six rebounds.
The Bears are back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Vermont.
