Providence, RI- Junior guard Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) led the Brown women's basketball team with 20 points, including eight of the team's 15 in overtime, and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bears to a 72-63 overtime victory over the visiting Columbia Lions on Friday evening. The victory improved Brown to 13-8 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League, while Columbia dropped to 2-18 and 0-6 in league play.
Columbia's Tyler Simpson lit up for a game-high 26 points, which included an 8-of-8 effort from the free throw line, and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Lions, while teammate Melissa Shafer added 18 points to the offense.
The Bears jumped out to an 11-6 lead just three minutes into the game, and built it up to a 20-12 advantage after a layup by sophomore Sophie Beutel (Toronto, ON) midway through the half. But the Lions would roar to a 17-9 run in the final 10 minutes of the stanza to edge the Bears 31-29 at the intermission.
Columbia's Simpson scored 12 of her 26 points in the first half as the Lions shot 41 percent (10-31) from the field and were 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. The squad was also shooting 50 percent (5-10) from beyond the arc.
The Bears went 32 percent from the field (10-31) and were just 33 percent from the trey (4-12).
But the Bears regained possession of the lead and held a five point lead at the 13:14 mark after a jumper by Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ), but the game would then be tied four more times in the remaining minutes of the second half as the squads would head into overtime tied at 57-57.
Sophomore point guard Lauren Clarke started off the overtime period with a three pointer, which gave the Bears the momentum they needed to take control of the game and earn the win. Columbia brought the game within one with just 1:28 left, but the Bears would pick up three steals in the next minute to help jump ahead by nine points.
Dixon picked up the first steal near halfcourt and put in a layup to give Brown a 66-63 lead with 40 seconds to go in the overtime, and Passafuime swiped one of her one which led to a Columbia foul. She sank both free throws to give Bruno a 68-63 lead, and then Dixon picked up another steal and went the distance for a layup giving Brown a seven-point advantage. With two seconds left, Dixon was fouled and put on the line to drain two free throws putting the Bears on top, 72-63.
Junior forward Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) had a solid game for the Bears netting 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the effort, while Passafuime netted 11 points and handed out four assists. Daniels also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and added nine points to the offense.
The Bears are back in action at 7 p.m. tomorrow vs. the Cornell Big Red. Cornell is coming off an 86-73 loss to Yale.
