Bears Roll to 61-47 Victory over San Jose State

San Jose, CA- The Brown women's basketball team earned its fifth consecutive win with a 61-47 victory over host San Jose State on Saturday evening at the Event Center in San Jose, Calif. Junior guard/forward Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) led the Bears' offense with 15 points and three rebounds to improve Brown to 8-4 overall on the year. The Spartans dropped to 3-10 on the season and were led by Brittany Johnson's double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Adding to Brown's offense was junior guard Sheila Dixon with 11 points and two rebounds, followed by Lauren Clarke and Hannah Passafuime with 10 points apiece. Passafuime also tallied her season's first double-double as she grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.

Brown dominated the Spartans on the boards 52-43 and held San Jose State to just 25 percent shooting from the floor and 24 percent from beyond the arc. The Bears finished the game 38 percent from the field , just 13 percent from the trey, and 68 percent from the charity stripe.

Brown's 33 percent shooting in the first half helped the squad gain a 23-20 lead at the half. Nickel scored seven of her 15 points in the first stanza while senior co-captain Aileen Daniels (Waldwick, NJ) netted six of her eight points to give Brown a two-point edge over the Spartans.

San Jose State had just one lead in the first 20 minutes of play, a 3-2 advantage at the 18:43 mark, but the Bears maintained control of the game holding up to six or eight point lead throughout most of the first half.

The Spartans gained a 29-28 lead just four minutes into the second half after a layup by Brittany Johnson, but the Bears extended their lead up to 10 at the 10:07 mark after two made free throws by Lauren Clarke (Colts Neck, NJ).

Free throws gave Brown its largest advantage of the night after freshman Nelly Weledji (Overland Park, KS) drained two to take a 15 point lead wit just 1:07 remaining in the game and sophomore Jordin Juker (Boise, ID) extended that lead to 16 with 55 seconds left, 61-45.

Also scoring for San Jose State was Brea Matthews with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Sara Plabljain with 10 points and two rebounds.

Brown will be back in action on Wednesday, January 4 against Rhode Island.
