Providence, RI- The Brown women's basketball team will host its annual Brown BEAR Basketball Classic on December 3rd and 4th at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Joining the Bears this weekend will be the Fairfield Stags (3-2), the Providence College Friars (3-3) and the University of Rhode Island Rams (1-6). Brown and Rhode Island tip off the tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, followed by Fairfield and Providence at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 4, URI will take on Fairfield at 2 p.m. and Brown will challenge Providence at 4 p.m.
In conjunction with Toys for Tots, Brown fans that bring in toys will receive a voucher redeemable for a ticket to a home game good for any contest remaining this season. Boxes for toys will be located in the lobby of the Pizzitola Sports Center. Also, fans not in attendance can watch the game, for a fee, via America ONE, or listen to free audio with play-by-play announcer Mike Mancuso calling the action. Live Stats will also be provided.
After capturing the Dead River Company Classic Championship with victories over Evansville and Maine, the Bears dropped a 63-55 decision to Fairfield on Wednesday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) and Sheila Dixon (Schenectady, NY) lead the Bears in scoring with 14.0 points apiece, while Dixon is grabbing a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game.
Rhode Island arrives in Providence with a 1-6 overall record and is coming off four straight losses after defeating Providence College 52-43 on Nov. 16. Ashley Rivera leads the Rams in scoring with 12.1 points per game and Sherrie Session leads the team in rebounding pulling down 6.1 per game. The Rams are averaging 55.9 points per game and are grab 35.7 rebounds per game.
The Providence College Friars will compete in the Brown Classic for the second straight year and head into the weekend with a 3-3 record, including wins in their last three straight games. The Friars and Bears will meet for the 22nd time on Saturday as PC leads the all-time series, 17-4, including a 9-0 record at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Leading the offense is Teya Wright with 14.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, followed by Rachel Barns with 11.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. The Friars are scoring 54.7 points per game, and averaging 37.7 rebounds per game.
