Bulldogs Take Down Bears, 64-49

Smithfield, RI- Three Bulldogs scored in double figures and two brought down double-digit rebounds to help lead the Bryant women's basketball team to a 64-49 victory over the visiting Brown University Bears on Tuesday evening at the Chace Athletic Center. Senior co-captain Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) led the Bears' offense with 15 points, and junior Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) chipped in with seven rebounds.

The Bears will now prepare for the Dead River Company Classic hosted at the University of Maine. Brown will take on Evansville at 4 p.m. on Friday, and will then play either Maine or Troy the following day.

The hot shooting Bulldogs had three players in double figure scoring this evening as Bryant shot 43 percent from the field in the second half (40 for the game) and kept the Bears to 34 percent from the floor.

The Bulldogs burst out to a 7-2 lead after the first seven minutes of play, but the Bears clawed back and cut their deficit to just one after a layup by freshman Nelly Weledji and a jumper Nickel. Bryant gained as much as an 11-point lead during the first half, with the help of Steph Cardamone's back-to-back three pointers with 4:54 to go, but a three pointer by Dixon put Brown back within eight with 1:12 remaining in the half. Naana Ankoma-Mensa closed out the first half with a free throw to give the Bulldogs a 32-23 lead at the intermission.

Bryant continued to roll after the half and extended its lead up to 16 after a three pointer by Cardamone sank her third trey of the night with 7:48 remaining in the contest. Bryant then went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 23-point lead, but Passafuime stopped its run with a three pointer at the 2:27 mark. The Bears then went on a run of their own, going 8-3 over the final two minutes cutting their deficit to 15 to end the game, 64-49.

The Bears had some solid offense from both Passafuime and Dixon, but the Bears were out-rebounded by 13 (43-30).

Bryant's Whittington led the Bulldogs with 15 points, followed by Cardamone and Ankoma-Mensa with 13 apiece. Ankoma-Mensa also brought down nine rebounds and picked up three steals, and Brittany Stahura added eight points and 12 rebounds.

Besides Passafuime and Dixon's 15 and 12 points, respectively, Nickel added nine points and seven rebounds, and Lauren Clarke handed out five assists.
