Providence, RI- Freshman Lauren Clarke and junior captain Aileen Daniels netted 15 points apiece to help lead the Brown University women's basketball team to a 65-55 victory over Columbia on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears finished the 2010-11 season with a weekend sweep, and ended 10-18 overall with a 6-8 record in the Ivy League. The Bears snapped Columbia's seven-game winning streak in the series, as the Lions dropped to 7-21 overall and 6-8 in the league.
In a half that saw just two lead changes and five ties, the Bears gained an immediate lead in the opening few minutes of play. But the Lions hung in and gained their first lead of the night at the 11:59 mark and built it to an eight-point advantage after a three pointer by Taylor Ward.
Junior captain Aileen Daniels drained a three pointer with 9:44 to go in the half, which sparked an 11-2 run over the next six minutes en route to a 22-18 lead with 3:23 on the clock. Columbia's Kathleen Barry scored the next four points to even the game at 22-22, but junior captain Hannah Passafuime knocked in a three with just under a minute to take a 25-22 lead heading into the locker room at half.
Columbia came out after the intermission and quickly tied the game after a three pointer by Brianna Orlich, but Brown's Clarke drained a three to extend the team's lead back up to three. Columbia would answer with a layup by Barry, but that was as close as the Lions would come as the Bears went off over the next eight minutes to gain an 11-point lead, 46-35, with 9:20 remaining in the game.
Clarke hit a runner in the lane with just one second left on the shot clock to put the Bears ahead 52-41 with 6:31 on the clock, but the hard-nosed Lions weren't going down with a fight. Two free throws by Tyler Simpson and a jumper by Melissa Shafer brought the squad back within four, but the Bears hit back-to-back buckets to forge ahead 58-50 with under three minutes remaining in the game.
Daniels put in a layup on the left side after a nice pass by Dixon under the hoop to keep an eight-point lead in the final 1:29, and free throws by Passafuime extended the lead to 10, as Brown held on for the win, 65-55.
The Bears had three double-figure scorers, as Daniels added three rebounds and an assist to her 15 points, and Clarke had five boards and three assists with her 15. Passafuime followed with a solid 12 points and seven rebounds, while also handing out four assists in the win tonight. For the fourth straight game, the Bears out-rebounded their opponent, grabbing 39 to Columbia's 36, and finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field and went 80 percent (12-15) from the charity stripe.
The Bears held Columbia to 32 percent shooting from the floor and just 16 percent (3-18) from beyond the arc. Barry finished her season with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwyer added 11 points.
