Dixon’s Double-Double Leads Bears Past Dartmouth, 56-55

Hanover, NH- Sophomore guard Sheila Dixon posted a career-high 22 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Brown University women's basketball team to a thrilling 56-55 victory over Dartmouth College on Saturday evening at Leede Arena.  Brown improved its record to 8-18 and 4-8 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth dropped to 7-18 and 3-8 in the league. 

Both teams got off to a slow start and struggled offensively as Dartmouth edged Brown 22-19 after the first 20 minutes of play.    The half saw eight lead changes and the score was tied three times, as Dartmouth went 30 percent (9-30) from the field and Brown shot just 23 percent (7-30).     

The score was tied 6-6 after the first eight minutes of play, and both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes.  Dartmouth sophomore Faziah Steen netted a mid-range jumper to give the Big Green a 12-11 lead, but Dixon scored the next six points for the Bears to take a 15-14 lead with 5:14 remaining in the half.  

A three pointer by junior captain Hannah Passafuime increased Brown's lead to four, but Dartmouth went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to take gain a 22-18 advantage.  Junior forward Aileen Daniels knocked in a free throw for the Bears at the 1:11 mark to head into halftime with a 22-19 deficit.

The teams heated up after the intermission, as Brown outscored Dartmouth 14-11 in the first eight minutes to even the score, 33-33.   But Dartmouth's Cassie Cooper and Meghan McFee netted back-to-back buckets to give Dartmouth a 37-33 lead with 10:36  on the clock.

Brown freshman Jordin Juker ended a five-minute scoreless streak for the Bears with two free throws, and Passafuime drained another three to put the Bears back on top, 38-37.  The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, but a three by rookie point guard Lauren Clarke and a layup by Dixon put the Bears back on top with a 49-47 lead with 5:02 left in the game.  Then, Dixon grabbed a big rebound and put in a layup to extend Brown's lead to four. 

Two free throws by Dartmouth's Sasha Dosenko with just under 2:00 on the clock brought the Big Green back within two, and McFee knocked in a wide open three at 1:22 to take a 52-51 lead. 

After a Brown timeout, Dixon nailed a three pointer with 1:00 to go, and then picked up a steal at the Dartmouth three point arc with 40 seconds left and went the length of the floor for a layup.   The Bears missed the front end of a one-and-one with nine seconds on the clock, and Dartmouth pushed the ball back down the floor and put in  a three at the buzzer ending the game in a 56-55 Brown victory. 

Dixon's 22 points and 14 rebounds led the Bears on offense, while freshman Lauren Clarke and Aileen Daniels added 10 points apiece.  Clarke also pulled down five rebounds for the Bears and handed out six assists, as Jordin Juker grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. 

Brown out-rebounded Dartmouth 44-38, which included 18 offensive boards.  The Bears finished shooting 31 percent from the field  and went 10-of-31 from the three.

Dartmouth had four players in double-figure scoring today, with McFee leading the attack with 19 points and 12 rebounds followed by Steen and Cooper with 11 points apiece. 

The Bears will head back home to host Cornell on Friday, March 4, and Columbia on Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m.
