Bears Win Three Straight with 57-56 Victory over Harvard

Post-Game Interview with Head Coach Jean Marie Burr

Providence, RI- Sophomore guard Sheila Dixon netted 12 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to help lead the Brown women's basketball team to its third straight victory with a 57-56 win over first-place Harvard this evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win over Harvard was Brown's first since its Ivy Championship season in 2005-06, and its first weekend sweep since that season as well. The Bears improved to 7-15 overall and are 3-5 in the Ivy League, while Harvard dropped to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in the league.

The 12 points and 11 rebounds was Dixon's third double-double of the season, as she added four assists, one block and two steals in 28 minutes of play. The Bears finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (22-52) and went 41 percent from the arc (9-22) while holding Harvard to 34 percent shooting from the field and just 16 percent from the three.

The Bears came out hot from the start and gained a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes of play. But Brown did not hang on long, as Harvard fought back and captured its first lead of the night after two free throws by Emma Markley with 13:23 to go. Harvard extended its lead to five at the 11:29 mark, but a jumper by sophomore Lindsay Nickel and a layup by freshman Sophie Beutel started Brown's 12-3 run to take a 25-19 lead with 6:46 remaining in the half.

The Crimson powered back and cut their deficit to one after a trey by Victoria Lippert, but Bruno once again showed their resilience and shut down the Harvard offense to gain a nine point lead, 33-24, with 3:30 left in the first half after Passafuime put in a layup. The Bears used 57 percent (15-26) shooting from the field and shot an astounding 55 percent (6-11) from beyond the arc to take a 38-29 lead at the half.

After the intermission, Harvard chipped away at Brown's nine-point lead and kept the game close throughout the rest of the half. The Crimson came within two with an 8-1 run at the 14:42 mark, but Dixon came up with a three pointer and a jumper to push Brown's lead back up to six.

Passafuime knocked down a huge three from the corner to give Bruno a seven point lead, 57-50, with 2:22 left in the game, but Christine Clarke put in a layup down at the other end and Emma Markley follows up with one of her as Harvard went on a 6-0 run to put the score at 57-56 with 48 seconds left in the game.

Brown came back down the floor and ran some time off the clock, but turned the ball over with 25 seconds left. Harvard called back-to-back timeouts to draw up a play, but Harvard missed two jumpers in the final seconds to hand Brown the win.

Hannah Passafuime led Brown in scoring tonight with 13 points, and Lindsay Nickel added 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman point guard Lauren Clarke had a solid performance as well, netting eight points, grabbing five rebounds and handing out five assists.

Harvard's Markley led the team with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Brogan Berry and Christine Clarke with 12 points apiece.

The Bears are back in action next weekend when it travels to Penn on Friday, Feb. 18 and Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 19.
