Philadelphia, PA- The Brown women’s basketball team (3-8) fell 65-36 to host St. Joseph’s University (5-7) in the first game of the Hawk Classic. Senior guard Christina Johnson led Brown’s offense with 11 points and brought down four rebounds, while sophomore Hannah Passafuime added eight points.
The Bears were a bit rusty after their 19-day break as the squad suffered 15 first-half turnovers to help St. Joseph’s to a 29-17 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Christina Johnson’s eight points was a team-high, as four other players added two points.
The Bears were down 8-2 after first nine minutes, but layups by Courtney Lee and Natalie Bonds brought the score to 8-6 at the 10:21 media timeout. Hannah Passafuime tied it up with a jumper on the right side, but St. Joe’s Brittany Ford put in a layup and sank the free throw to extend the Hawks lead to three, but Brown came within one after a jumper by Sarah Delk before St. Joseph’s went on its run.
The Hawks gained its biggest lead of the half, 18-10, after a three-pointer by Katie Kuester but Johnson scored twice to bring the Bears’ deficit to four with 4:36 remaining in the first stanza. St. Joseph’s then went on an 11-3 run to breeze to a 29-17 advantage heading into the locker room at the half.
The Hawks went on a 10-2 run to begin the second half to extend the team’s lead to 39-19 at 16:25, as Passafuime added Brown’s lone bucket at the 17:16 mark. St. Joseph’s continued its hot shooting throughout half, as the squad shot 40 percent from the field to gain a 29-point advantage after a jumper by Ford as the Hawks held Brown scoreless for the next five minutes.
A three pointer by Hannah Passafuime put the score at 59-32 with 3:19 remaining in the game, as she finished the game with eight points, and Natalie Bonds added a layup to cut the deficit to 24. Caroline King then threw in a layup with just over a minute left, but the Hawks’ Katie Kuester hit a three followed by four consecutive points by Mireia Vila to end the game 65-36.

St. Joseph’s finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field as Dominique Bryant led the offense with 11 points. The Bears finished 23 percent from the field and went nine-of-12 from the free throw line.
The Bears will now play at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game of the Hawk Classic. The Bears will take on the loser of the South Carolina/Boston University game tomorrow.
