Brown Women’s Basketball Falls to American, 64-54

Providence, RI- Senior Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Brown during its 64-54 deficit to American on Wednesday afternoon.  The Bears had a 32-29 advantage at the half, but the squad couldn’t hang on to the lead as American came back and earned the win.  Brown dropped to 0-2 on the young season as American improved to 2-1.

In a first half where the lead changed five times, Brown junior Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) led the way with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.   With the game tied at 13 with 11:16 left in the half, Delk drained a three pointer to go ahead by three, but American’s Ohemaa Nyanin put in a layup to bring its deficit to one.  Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) netted a trey  and then picked up a steal and gave it to Johnson for a jumper, giving Bruno a 20-15 lead with 9:15 left in the first stanza.

The Eagles came back and tied the game at 25-25 with 5:27 left, but another three by Passafuime and a layup by Johnson extended the lead back up five for the Bears.  Both teams continued to go basket for basket, as Brown headed into halftime with a 32-29 lead.

American’s Michelle Kirk led the way with 10 points in the first half, followed by Liz Leer with eight points.  The Eagles shot 42 percent from the field on 11-26 shooting from the floor.  Delk led the Bears with eight points at the half on 3-4 shooting from the field (2-3 from the arc) as Brown shot 36 percent as a team from the field.

Brown maintained control of the lead throughout most of the second half, but American then went on a nine-minute 17-0 run to take a lead a 51-41 lead.  Passafuime broke the Bears’ silence at the 5:24 mark with a jumper, and a layup by Bonds and a four-point play by freshman Taylor Masaschi (Chatham, MA) put the Bears within four, but that was as close as they would come as American pulled out a 10-point victory.

Overall, the Bears shot 33 percent for the game and 32 percent from the arc.  The Bears had 13 turnovers, eight of which the team suffered in the second half of play.  American out-rebounded the bears 45-38 and shot 38 percent from the field.

Johnson led the Bears with 12 points and six rebounds, as Delk added eight points and six boards. Senior point guard Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) also chipped in with nine points and five assists.
