BOSTON – Senior Matt Mahoney (Swampscott, Mass.) turned in an eighth-place individual finish as the Brown University men's and women's cross county teams both competed at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown meet on Friday at Franklin Park.
The men's team placed fourth out of 18 teams with 117 total points, trailing only No. 3 Syracuse, No. 27 Illinois and No. 21 Indiana, while the women's team finished eighth out of 22 squads.
Mahoney was eighth overall out of 157 runners, pacing the Bruno side at the Battle in Beantown for the second straight year, as he completed the 8-kilometer course at 24:28. Fellow senior Martin Martinez (Waukegan, Ill.) and sophomore Cameron Daly (Meredith, N.H.) were 21st and 22nd, respectively, in times of 24:47 and 24:50.
Junior Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) paced the women's team with a 19th-place finish as she completed the 5-kilometer course at 17:39. Junior Emma Sloan (Franklin, Tenn.) also posted a top-50 finish, as she placed 36th at 18:02.
Juniors Allison Bellows (Coventry, R.I.) and Lucy Srour (Potomac, Md.) were 65th and 68th in times of 18:32 and 18:34. Senior Alexis Van Pernis (Kailua Kona, Hawaii) crossed in 78th place at 18:42 wrap up the scorers.
In the open 5K race, sophomore Zachary Lanigan (Sydney, Australia) captured first place overall in a time of 15:44.
Brown returns to action on Friday, October 13 when the Bears host the Rothenberg Run at Goddard Park in Warwick, R.I.
