PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Martin Martinez (Waukegan, Ill.) captured first place overall at the Columbia Invitational and the women's team claimed the Nassaney Invite title as the Brown cross country squads opened the 2017 season at a pair of meets over the weekend.
The men's team was runner-up out of four teams on Friday, trailing only Cornell, while the women's side placed third overall.
Martinez finished the five-mile course first overall, topping the field of 58 runners in a time of 26:45.8, while fellow senior Matt Mahoney (Swampscott, Mass.) was third overall at 26:50.5.
Senior Andrew Foerder (Seattle, Wash.) also posted a top-10 finish as he placed ninth in a time of 27:07.2. Sophomore Cameron Daly (Meredith, N.H.) and rookie David Scherrer (Virginia Beach, Va.) crossed 11th and 12th, respectively, at 27:13.9 and 27:15.8 to round out the scorers.
Junior Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) placed tenth overall in the women's race, completing the 6-kilometer course in a time of 22:26.1. Junior Emma Sloan (Franklin, Tenn.) crossed the finished line at 24:04.3 for 15th overall. Allison Bellows (Coventry, R.I.), Clare Peabody (Aptos, Calif.) and Alexis Van Pernis (Kailua Kona, Hawaii) placed 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively, at 23:08.7, 23:15.1 and 23:16.6.
The Brown women's team also claimed first place at the Bryant Nassaney Invitational on Saturday with 34 total points, placing ahead of Providence, Rhode Island, Holy Cross, Bryant, Siena and Hartford.
The Bears benefited from solid pack running at the top of the field, as Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) took fifth at 18:07.0, followed by fellow rookies Hannah Butler (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Ally Hajda (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) in the next two spots at 18:09.1 and 18:15.0.
Junior Katia Matora (Redmond, Wash.) earned a 12th-place finish in a time of 18:29.5
Brown returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22 for the Battle in Beantown meet at Franklin Park in Boston.
