Christian Escareno To Compete in Division I NCAA Cross Country Championships

Providence, RI- The NCAA Division I Men’s &
Women’s Track & Field Committee recently announced the
team and individual qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. Brown
junior Christian Escareno was among the thirty-eight individuals
selected to participate in each championship through an automatic
qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers
finished in the top 25 in their region. The last individual
qualifier for Brown was on the women’s side when Smita Gupta
‘08 placed 69th in 2007.
“We are ecstatic that Christian has made nationals as an
individual,” said Head Coach Craig Lake. “It was his
goal all season to do so. Escareno is the first guy to qualify from
Brown since 2004 when Jeff Gaudette finished 28th in the nation to
earn All-American honors and Pat Tarpy finished in 68th.
Christian’s ideal goal would be to finish with All-American
honors by placing amongst the top 40.”
Indiana State University will host the Championships, Nov. 23, at
LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley
Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. The men’s race
will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. Eastern time, followed by
the women’s race at 12:58 p.m. Both championship races will
be broadcast live on Versus Network and streamed online via
NCAA.com.
