Las Vegas, NV - The Brown wrestling team took part in the 23rd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Freshman sensation Jeff Schell advanced to the round of 16 at 125 while seven others advanced to the round of 32 in their respective weight classes.
Despite losing his first match by a mere 3-2 margin, Schell bounced back to record two straight victories. Schell defeated Missouri Valley's Talon Vickers 6-0 and Cornell's Nick Bridge 4-3. He was defeated in the round of 16 by finalist Efren Ceballos of Cal State-Bakersfield.
At 133, junior Dan Appello opened up with two wins before dropping a 4-0 decision to Mark Budd of Buffalo. Appello finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Junior Doran Heist, wrestling at 184, picked up three straight wins to start off. He defeated Scot O'Rear of Cal State-Bakersfield 6-1 before getting a major decision over Northwest Wyoming's Shawn Vincent, 10-2. Heist also picked up a 9-3 win over Gerrett Hicks of Buffalo before losing to Cal State-Fullerton's Jesse Taylor.
Brown will now take its exam break, getting back to competition on January 8 at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas, TX.
