Bears Eliminated Against Tough Competition at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational
Dec. 1, 2007
Las Vegas, NV - All 10 Brown wrestlers were eliminated from competition on day one of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday. Eight of the Bears faced at least one seeded opponent from the tournament field of 50 teams, with four facing a top-five seed in their first match. With 16 points, the Bears sit in a tie for 30th place with the tournament half over.
Senior tri-captain Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA), sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY), junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) and senior tri-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) all had 2-2 records to lead the Bears on the day.
At 133, Schell won his first two matches via a major decision and 5-2 decision over the 12th seed, Todd Schavrien of Arizona State, to advance to the round of 16, where he was majored himself by fifth seed Reece Humphrey of Ohio State. He was then eliminated in a close 3-2 decision by Nick Murray of Virginia Tech. Bloom took a similar path at 149, winning his first match and advancing past fourth seed Don Fisch of Rider by a default before falling in the round of 16. In the wrestlebacks, he was pinned by seventh seed Josh Wagner of Missouri.
Gevelinger and Mock both split their first two matches, all by decision. Gevelinger dominated his first wrestleback opponent, winning in a tech fall, 17-0, after six minutes, but then was majored by the number eight seed, 15th-ranked Lior Zamir of Penn, 18-5. Mock was one of two Brown wrestlers to avoid any seeded opponents, winning his first and third matches, 5-2 and 8-3, and dropping his second and third, 17-13 and 3-1.
Both senior tri-captain Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) and junior Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) had the poor luck to face their draw's top seed in their first match. At 141, Savino lost a major decision to #3 Charles Griffin of Hofstra, 12-3, before falling in his second match. Stearns faced #7 Max Askren of Missouri in his first match at 197, and was pinned in 5:37. He won his next match before being eliminated by 11th seed John Weakly of Ohio State.
Junior Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) had a similarly tough first opponent, second-seeded Mike Poeta of Illinois, ranked third at 157 pounds. Poeta handed Fazio a 16-1 tech fall loss early in the second period, and Fazio lost his next match to be eliminated. Junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) had the poor luck to face the fifth and sixth seeds, #9 Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska and #15 Zach Shanaman of Penn, in his two matches, losing both by decision.
Rounding out the Brown lineup, sophomore Bran Crudden (Columbia, CT) defeated his first opponent, then fell to fourth seeded #10 Brandon Browne of Nebraska, 24-12 and was eliminated in his next match. Sophomore Mike Piccirillo (Dix Hills, NY), filling in for the injured Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, NY), who will be likely be out for the rest of the season, won his first match before losing twice as well.
The tournament's final rounds will be held on Saturday. Entering the second day, #14 Nebraska holds the lead with 45 points, while #15 Edinboro and #7 Missouri are right behind at 42.5. #16 Ohio State, with 41.5 points, and #18 Illinois, with 41 points, round out the top five. #9 Wisconsin (6th, 39.5 pts.), #20 Navy (T-8th, 36 pts.), #10 Michigan (10th, 34.5 pts.), #22 Penn (T-11th, 33.5 pts.), #19 Pittsburgh (13th, 33 pts.)), #25 Old Dominion (14th, 31.5 pts.), and #12 Hofstra (T-16th, 25.5 pts.) round out the ranked teams in the field.
