Brockport, NY - The Brown wrestling team opened up its 2005-06 season at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Saturday. The Bears finished tenth overall as several of their top wrestlers did not compete. Sophomore Jeff Schell finished fifth overall at 125 lbs. while sophomore Mark Savino and freshman Chris Musser went 3-2 on the day at 141 and 165 lbs. respectively. National powerhouse Oklahoma, which finished third overall at last year's NCAA Championship, won the events while Ivy rival Penn took second.
Schell received a bye in the first round of action and went on to advance to the semifinals, winning his next two matches. He finished the day 2-2 on the mat. Junior Nate Myers also went 2-2 on the day at 125 lbs. as well.
Wrestling at 141 lbs., sophomore Ben Cannon went 2-2 while Savino took wins of 18-3, 8-1 and 3-1 in the consolation bracket.
While the Bears did not have a 157 lbs. entry, Musser was impressive in his Brown debut, going 3-2 on the day. Junior Shawn Kitchner also went 1-2 at 165.
At 174 lbs., junior Harrison Moskowitz went 0-2 while freshman Mike Gevelinger had a 2-2 day.
