Philadelphia, PA - The Brown wrestling squad competed at the EIWA Championships over the weekend, posting an 11th-place finish in the conference. Senior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) highlighted the competition for the Bears, earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament by virtue of his fourth-place finish at 184.
Gevelinger, who came into the event as the sixth seed, lost his initial bout to third-seeded Justin Kerber of Cornell, sending him into the consolation bracket. However, once there, Gevelinger came to life, winning three consecutive bouts to propel himself into the third-place match. With a spot at NCAA's already assured, Gevelinger squared off against two seed Louis Caputo. Though Caputo came away with a 10-2 decision, Gevelinger still took fourth, and with it the opportunity to continue his season.
Several other Bears also turned in solid performances, and may be in line to receive wild card bids on Wednesday. Fellow senior Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) also took fourth in his weight class, competing at 197. However, as just two wrestlers received automatic bids at 197, Stearns did not qualify for NCAA's yet.
Junior Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, N.Y.) found himself in a similar position at 125. Einfrank also finished fourth, but just missed out on the automatic bid as only three were taken in his weight class. Both wrestlers will have another chance, however, as 52 wild card berths will be handed out by the NCAA on Wednesday of this week.
The Bears will be back in action on March 18, when those who qualify will travel to St. Louis for the NCAA Championships.
