Providence, R.I. - The Bears put in a valiant effort against #3 Cornell on Friday afternoon, keeping the majority of their matches close despite being outmanned. Senior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, N.H.) pulled out a clutch 3-2 win in the heavyweight division to close out the match, giving Brown three points and a final margin of 32-9 that was closer than the score indicated.
After the Big Red took the first two events, giving them an 11-0 lead early, junior Stephen DeLorenzo (Wantagh, N.Y.) turned the tide briefly in Brown's favor with an exciting 5-2 decision at 141. Delorenzo seized the momentum in the first period with a two-point takedown, then followed with an escape in the second and another takedown in the third to seal the victory.
Though Cornell took another win at 149, the Bears answered once again at 157, as junior Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, N.J.) picked up a 3-2 decision, highlighted by a two-point takedown in the first period. Tracy added an escape in the second for a 3-1 advantage, and then held on down the stretch to give Brown three points, closing the gap to 14-6.
Despite gutty efforts from a number of Bears, the Big Red held the advantage over the next four weight classes, picking up wins at 165, 174, 184, and 197, and pushing their lead to an insurmountable 32-6. However, Zdrada ended the day on a positive note for Brown, scoring a two-point takedown in the first period for an early lead. He then picked up an escape in the second, for a 3-1 lead, and held on in the third despite the desperate attempts of Cornell to come back.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Columbia at 2 p.m. to wrap up the 2008-09 season.
