Bears Get 12 Points In Final Two Matches To Beat Columbia, 21-20

Feb. 17, 2007

Providence, RI - In a finish that would seem more likely in Hollywood than in the Ivy League, the Brown wrestling team (5-11, 4-6 EIWA, 2-2 Ivy) got 12 points in the final two matches of its dual with Columbia (6-4, 2-4, 2-2), beating the Lions, 21-20. The Bears picked up six points on an injury default at 197, then junior tri-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) pinned his opponent at heavyweight in just 54 seconds, sealing the win for the Bears in dramatic fashion. In earlier action, the Bears defeated non-conference opponent Wagner (0-17), 46-0.

After the Lions, who were among three teams who were unranked but received votes in the latest national poll, took the opening match at 125 for a 3-0 lead, junior Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) picked up a 2-0 decision to tie the dual back up. Junior Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) was on his way to picking up a major decision at 141 when the referee disqualified his opponent, giving the Bears six points. However, that 9-3 lead slowly disappeared, as the Lions won the next five matches to go up 20-9. At 197, freshman Josh Serene (Kittanning, PA) was up 2-0 in the second period when his opponent, Nick Sommerfeld, used up his injury time and was forced to default. Mock wasted little time in securing the victory, quickly taking down Columbia's Kevin Lester and pinning him in less than a minute.

In earlier action against Wagner, the Bears were rarely challenged en route to their second sweep of the season. Five Bears won by pinfall: freshman Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, NY) at 125, sophomore Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA) wrestling up from his usual class of 157 at 165, freshman Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) at 174, freshman Larry Otsuka (Upper Saddle River, NJ) at 197, and Mock at 285. Freshman Ross Baldwin (Summit, NJ) also picked up his first career win, taking a 12-4 major decision at 141.

On Saturday, Brown will finish the dual season against Cornell and Delaware State. The Cornell dual will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a match-up of the Big Red and Hornets before the Bears face DSU.
