Bears Win Two Against Harvard, Wagner

Feb. 14, 2009

Boston, MA - The Brown wrestling squad enjoyed its best day of the season on Saturday, narrowly edging EIWA rival Harvard before cruising to a convincing win over Wagner. The Bears knocked off the Crimson in the opener, winning the final two matches for a 25-19 win. Bruno then wrestled in dominating fashion against the Bulldogs, coming away with a 49-0 victory.

After Brown picked up a win by forfeit at125 against Harvard, the Crimson tied things up at 133. However, junior Stephen DeLorenzo (Wantagh, N.Y.), wrestling at 141, picked up a fall for the Bears, regaining the early lead. Though Harvard then captured wins at 149 and 157, Bruno responded again in the 165-pound weight class, as rookie Jeff Lemmer (Milwaukee, WI) picked up a major decision to turn the momentum back in favor of the Bears.

The Crimson made a final push with wins at 174 and 184, but senior Leo Saniuk's (Akron, OH) medical decision at 197gave Brown the win, as classmate Zach Zdrara (Atkinson, N.H.) then capped off the scoring with a decision by forfeit, giving the Bears the final 25-19 margin.

Following Brown's win over Harvard, the action then turned to Wagner, a match which started off well for Bruno as they again won points by forfeit at 125. Little changed the rest of the way for Brown, as the Bears then went on to a major decision, a fall, and a pair of technical falls respectively at 133, 141, 149, and 157, giving Brown an insurmountable lead. After a pair of decisions in the 165 and 174-pound weight classes, senior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) continued to rack up points at 184, coming away with a technical fall. Another pair of falls in the final two bouts gave Brown its largest margin of victory this season, as Bruno won easily, shutting out the Bulldogs 49-0.

The Bears will be back in action on Friday, February 20, when they return home to host Cornell at 3 p.m. in the final weekend of the season.
