Bears Fall to #25 Penn, 25-9

Feb. 9, 2008

Providence, RI - Senior captain Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) made it a 3-0 weekend, as he and juniors Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) and Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) won their matches in the Brown wrestling team's (6-7, 2-5 EIWA, 1-1 Ivy League) 25-9 loss to #25 Penn (10-4, 3-0 EIWA, 2-0 Ivy League) on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center.

Penn got out to a 4-0 lead when #8 Rollie Peterkin earned a 15-3 major decision over sophomore Mike Piccirillo (Dix Hills, NY) at 125. Schell got three points back for the Bears at 133, beating Bryan Ortenzio, 2-1, on riding time.

Senior captain Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ), had the most exciting match of the day for the second day in a row, as he took on Rick Rappo at 141 pounds. Savino scored the first points on a takedown, but Rappo was able to reverse him onto his back, closing the first period up 8-2 after two three-point near falls. Savino was able to storm back though, scoring four takedowns to close the gap to 12-11 late in the third period. However, needing a takedown because Rappo had a point coming for riding time, Savino was unable to come all the way back, as the Quaker scored a takedown of his own for a 15-11 final.

At 149, sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) put up a solid effort against #14 Cesar Grajeles, entering the third period tied 0-0 before Grajales got an escape, takedown, and a point for riding time to take a 4-1 win. Penn made the team score 14-3 after Rob Hitschler took a 15-4 major decision over junior Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) at 157.

Musser was able to defeat Tom Timothy 3-1 at 165, scoring a takedown and an escape. Penn then took five points from a tech fall at 174, as Scott Giffin beat freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, Ohio), 21-6, after a point for riding time. Lior Zamir clinched the match for the Quakers at 184, winning a 9-3 decision over junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI). Stearns got the Bears' final win at 197, 2-1, before Trey McLean bested junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) at heavyweight, 11-5.

Next weekend, the Bears will host their final home dual of the season, as Harvard comes to town on Saturday at 2 p.m.
