Brown Grapplers Go 2-0 at Princeton, 0-2 at Penn

The Brown University Wrestling team competed in four different matches this weekend and came away with two wins and two losses. An injured Bears wrestling team defeated Princeton and Wagner, but fell to Penn and Rider.

Brown defeated Princeton by a score of 22-14 as seven Bears recorded wins. At 125 freshman Lucas Magnani (Islip, NY) won 6-3 while freshman David Saadeh (Lancaster, PA) won 4-3 at 148. Sophomore Michael Savino (Lawrenceville, NJ) recorded a 6-3 victory at 157 as senior Chris Ayers (Newton, NJ) won a 15-5 decision at 165.

Junior Nick Ciarcia (Berlin, CT) won 4-2 at 197 as two Bears won in overtime in junior Adam Santee (Perry, OH) who won 3-1 at 174 and freshman heavyweight Lee Beane (Bridgewater, MA) won 3-1.

Also competing against Princeton was freshman Dan Apello (Roselle Park, NJ) who lost 6-0 at 133, sophomore Anthony Marconi (Patterson, NY) who lost by fall at :59, and freshman Peter Gladish (Kentfield, CA) who lost at 184, 16-0.

The Bears then went on to defeat Wagner 34-6. Freshmen Apello and Greg Pace (Bethel, CT) both won by forfeit as Saadeh recorded the only fall of the day for the Bears at 3:46. Sophomore Shawn Cully (Cransberry Twp., PA) recorded a 15-8 win at 149 as Beane accumulated his second win of the day, with a 6-1 win at heavyweight.

Also grabbing wins for Brown were Sean Jenkins (Schnecksville, PA), 165, and Saadeh, 157, who both recorded 19-4 technical fall decision victories. Wrestling for Brown but coming away with losses were Marconi, 141, and freshman Doran Heist (Meadville, PA) who was defeated 9-7 at197.

Brown then traveled to the Palestra where they took on Penn, but dropped a 27-11 decision to the Quakers. At 125 Magnani lost by fall at 2:24 as Marconi lost by technical fall 16-1 at 133. Pace lost by major decision 13-0 at 141, while Savino, Ayers, Gladish, and Beane all lost by decision in their respective weights.

Coming away with wins over Penn at 149 Saadeh won by major decision with a score of 15-4 as Jenkins won 11-3 at 165 and Ciarcia won 3-1 at 184.

The Bears then wrestled their final match of the weekend as they fell to Rider 20-18. Magnani grappled his way to a 3-2 win at 125 as Apello won by forfeit at 133. Saadeh and Ciarcia both won their matches in overtime, Saadeh 14-12 at 149 and Ciarcia 3-1 at 184.

Jenkins grabbed a 7-4 win at 165 as Gladish won by major decision 11-3 at 197. Loosing by major decision for the Bears were Marconi 17-2 at 141 and heavyweight Beane 16-3. Also wrestling for the Bears but coming away with losses were Savino, 12-3 at 157 and Santee, 3-2 at 174.

Brown is now 8-9 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. The Bears will host Columbia this Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Pizzitola Gymnasium and then host Cornell on Saturday also at 2:00 p.m.
