Philadelphia, PA - The Brown wrestling team split a pair of Ivy League bouts on the road over the weekend, dealing Princeton an emphatic 41-3 loss after falling in a tough match against Penn, 34-6. With the split, the Bears move to 3-9 on the season, and pick up their first EIWA win.
In the earlier match of the day, the Bears took on the Penn Quakers , coming away with a disappointing 34-6 loss. Penn set the tone for the match early, coming away with wins at 125, 133, and 141 for a quick 11-0 lead. Wrestling at 149, sophomore Ricky Bailey (Palmyra, N.J.) did his best to turn the tide, however, pulling out a tight 5-3 decision to put the Bears on the board. The match was highlighted by an early takedown in the first period, giving Bailey a lead which he refused to relinquish.
The Quakers were able to answer once again though, following Bailey's victory with wins in the next three weight classes, including a fall at 165 that helped push Penn's lead to a near-insurmountable 24-3 margin. Senior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) continued his impressive individual season at 184, however, recording an overtime 6-4 win to give the Bears an additional three points. Following Gevelinger's win though, it was all Quakers in the final two events, as a fall and a medical decision at 197 and 285 respectively gave Penn the final 34-6 win.
After the Penn match, however, the Bears turned the tables on Princeton, coming away with a resounding 41-3 win. Junior Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, N.Y.) set the tone immediately, earning a fall in 2:47 to give Brown six early points. That would end up being all that Bruno needed, although the Bears continued to tack on points in the next two events, earning wins by forfeit at 133 and 141. Sophomore Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) then picked up a medical decision at 149, giving Brown an already insurmountable lead.
Bruno then picked up three consecutive wins at 157, 165, and 174 for an additional nine points, before Princeton finally got its only points of the day, a decision at 184. Senior Leo Saniuk (Akron, OH) recorded another fall at 197, before Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) wrapped up the scoring with a 14-3 decision in the heavyweight division, giving Brown the final 41-3 margin.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, February 14, when they travel to take on Harvard and Boston University.
