Bears Nearly Knock Off #25 Army In 19-18 Battle

West Point, NY - The Brown wrestling team nearly pulled off an upset over 25th ranked Army on Friday night. The Bears pulled out to an 18-6 lead with three bouts left. A pin at 125 by freshman sensation Jeff Schell gave the Bears a 12-point lead heading into the fina™rO?or Schell marked Brown's third straight as freshman Leo Saniuk, wrestling at 197, and heavyweight Lee Beane '06 picked up 7-4 and 7-3 wins respectively over their opponents.
The match began with a narrow 10-8 decision in favor of Army at 157 between the Black Knight's Jon Anderson and Brown's Mike Savino '06. Senior Heath Lohrman pulled out a key 7-4 win at 165 to knot the score at 3.
Junior Mike Pedro followed up with a 6-1 victory at 174, his fourth straight. Army's Charles Martin defeated junior Doran Heist 9-7 at 184, tying the score back at 6 apiece. The Bears went on to score the next 12 points with the wins by Saniuk, Beane and Schell.
Army mounted its comeback at the 133 match as Tony Severo edged out junior Dan Appello, 2-1. A 23-8 major decision by Patrick Simpson over freshman Ross Johnson brought the Black Knights to within five, 18-13, heading into the final match.
Army's only chance at winning the match in regulation would be by getting a pin and that's just what it did. Phillip Simpson, who came into the match with a 13-1 record, pinned junior Shawn Cully with 17 seconds left in the match to give Army the narrow one-point victory.
Brown falls to 3-4 on the year while Army improved to 10-3. The Bears will be back in action tomorrow, facing some more stiff competition at Lehigh, which is ranked fifth in the nation. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
