West Point, N.Y. - The Brown wrestling squad dropped a pair of duals over the weekend, falling to Lehigh and Army on consecutive afternoons to fall to 2-7 on the season and 0-4 in league matches. Junior Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, N.Y.) had a solid afternoon for the Bears, taking a major decision against the Mountain Hawks before narrowly losing his bout at West Point on Sunday afternoon.
Facing national power Lehigh on Saturday afternoon, Einfrank got Bruno off to a strong start in the 125-pound weight class, earning a 20-8 major decision over Kellen Aura to give the Bears a quick 4-0 lead. However, the Mountain Hawks then took over the event, coming away with wins in the next seven weight classes to pull away to an insurmountable 25-4 lead. Senior Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) accounted for the rest of Brown's points, narrowly edging Lehigh's Joe Kennedy 3-2 to pick up another three points. A Mountain Hawk win in the heavyweight division gave Lehigh the final points for a 29-7 victory over the Bears.
On Sunday, Brown continued its road trip by traveling to West Point for a match with Army. After a draw for the starting class, the event began with rookie Jeff Lemmer's (Milwaukee, WI) 12-5 overtime win in the 165-pound weight class, giving the Bears the early lead. Junior Bran Crudden (Columbia, CT) and senior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) then followed with a pin and major decision, respectively, in the next two weight classes for a 13-0 Bruno lead.
However, the Black Knights rallied back for wins at 197 and 285, including a major decision in the latter, closing the gap to 13-7 heading into the 125 division. In the lightweight class, junior Greg Einfrank (Jefferson Valley, N.Y.) was nearly able to pick up three points for the Bears, but fell 4-3 on several controversial calls from the official. Though senior Ross Baldwin (Summit, N.J.) was able to take a 7-2 decision at 133, Army built on the momentum of the close 125 match to win the final three events and take home a 21-16 victory that was secure only after the final event.
The Bears will be back in action on February 7, when they have a road double-header against Penn at 12 p.m. and Princeton at 5:30 p.m.
