Providence, RI - In its first home dual of the year, the Brown wrestling team (4-4) defeated Drexel (8-8), 22-15 at the Pizzitola Center on Friday afternoon. The dual came down to the final match, as junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) got a takedown in the final minute to take a 5-1 win at 165 and clinch a Bears victory.
The Dragons got out to a 4-0 lead to start the match, as junior Scott Hunter took a 12-3 major decision over freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, OH). However, the Bears retook the lead quickly, winning the next three matches. Junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) won at 184, 6-3, winning his fifth match in his last six, followed by junior Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) winning a 6-1 decision at 197.
At 285, junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) entered the third period of his match with Bryant Deinhardt down, 3-2. He tied it up with an escape at the start of the period, but Deinhardt was awarded a point and held a 4-3 lead entering the final minute. However, Zdrada scored a late takedown and three-point near fall, winning an 8-5 decision after Deinhardt scored a point for an escape.
Drexel tied the match at 125, as 11th-ranked Steve Mytych scored a tech fall victory over senior Nathan Myers (Warwick, RI), but Brown's two healthy senior captains, Jeff Schell and Mark Savino, got the lead right back with a pair of wins. Schell dominated John McDermott at 133, taking an 11-0 major decision, and Savino followed by controlling his match and taking a 9-5 decision.
Sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) won another close match at 149, this one by sudden victory. The only points scored in regulation by he and Lewis Baker were on escapes to begin the second and third periods. In the first extra period, Bloom was able to score a takedown with 16 seconds remaining to take the 3-1 win and give the Bears a 10-point lead, 19-9.
Ryan Hluschak, the 11th-ranked wrestler at 157, kept the Dragons in the match by pinning junior Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) in the third period. With the final match set to decide the outcome, Musser and Billy Haydt went into the final minute tied at 1-1. Although he needed to take several timeouts for a bloody nose, Musser was able to score a takedown and two-point near fall in the final half minute, clinching the match for Brown with a 5-1 win.
On Saturday, the Bears will face two EIWA opponents at the Pizzitola Center, hosting Army at 11 a.m. and Lehigh at 6 p.m.
