New Brunswick, NJ - The Brown wrestling team improved to 4-3 on the season with a 19-16 win over EIWA foe Rutgers on Saturday in New Jersey. Junior Shawn Kitchner along with sophomores Leo Saniuk and Levon Mock all limited their opponents to just one point to lead the Bears to victory. Brown is now 1-1 in EIWA Conference action.
After a narrow 8-7 loss by junior Nate Myers at 125, Brown went on to win four of the next five matches. Senior Dan Appello fought Kellen Bradley to a 2-1 triple overtime victory at 133 lbs. Senior Mike Ashton took a 8-4 decision over Mike Ferrara at 149 lbs.
Senior Mike Savino cruised to an 11-5 win over Jamie Lijo at 157 lbs., while Kitchner got a 9-1 major decision victory over Matt Pletcher at 165 lbs. The Scarlet Knights scored back-to-back major decision victories at 174 and 184 lbs. to grab a 16-13 advantage with two matches left.
Saniuk and Mock pulled through under pressure, recording 4-1 and 6-1 victories at 197 and 285 lbs. respectively to give the Bears the come from behind victory.
Brown will return home this Friday to face Drexel at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the Bears will battle Lehigh at 10:30 a.m. and Army at 3 p.m.
