Bears Split with Franklin & Marshall, Rutgers, In EIWA Duals
Jan. 20, 2008
East Brunswick, NJ - A pair of pins by senior captains Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) and Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) led the Brown wrestling team (3-4, 1-2 EIWA) to a 28-13 win over Franklin & Marshall (3-6, 0-5 EIWA) in the first of two EIWA dual matches on Saturday afternoon. The Bears later fell to host Rutgers (6-4, 4-2 EIWA), 26-9. Schell and junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) were both 2-0 on the day, as Gevelinger ran his record to 3-0 on the Bears' three-match road trip.
The Bears opened the day with the Diplomats, and went down 6-0 when junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) and sophomore Mike Piccirillo (Dix Hills, NY) lost close decisions at 285 and 125, respectively. However, Schell and Savino got the Bears back on top quickly, winning their matches at 133 and 141 by first-round pinfalls for a 12-6 Brown lead.
After a loss by sophomore Bryan Tracy (Williamstown, NJ) at 149 by major decision brought F&M back within two, junior Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) won a narrow 5-4 decision to keep the Brown lead. Junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY) took a 9-1 major decision at 165 to extend the lead to 19-10, and after freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, OH) lost at 174 to ranked Justin Herbert, Gevelinger won a 3-0 decision at 184 to ice the Brown win. Junior Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA) won by forfeit at 197 for the final 28-13 score.
Against the host Scarlet Knights, a 5-3 overtime win by senior Nathan Myers (Warwick, RI) at 125 and a 4-1 win by Schell at 133 gave the Bears an early 6-4 lead, but that would be their last lead of the day, as the only other win came in a 7-2 decision for Gevelinger at 184. There were some close losses, however, as Musser dropped a 3-1 decision in overtime at 165, while Savino fell 6-3 at 141.
Next weekend, the Bears begin a stretch of seven consecutive matches at home, as Drexel comes to the Pizzitola Center on Friday at 2 p.m. The following day, EIWA powerhouses Army and Lehigh will hit College Hill for duals at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
