Jan. 18, 2008
Lewisburg, PA - Four wrestlers won decisions in the Brown wrestling team's first EIWA dual meet of the season on Friday, as the Bears (2-3, 0-1 EIWA) fell at Bucknell (5-7-1, 2-2 EIWA), 21-12. Brown stayed in the dual until the final match, as juniors Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ), Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI), and Branden Stearns (Edinboro, PA), and sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) won decisions.
The Bison won the first three matches to get out to a quick 9-0 lead. Senior Nathan Myers (Warwick, RI) dropped an 8-4 decision to Greg Hart at 125 in the opening match. Senior captain Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) lost to 15th-ranked David Marble, 10-4, at 133, followed by fellow senior captain Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) losing a 10-6 decision to Luke Chohany at 141.
At 149 and 157, Bloom and Fazio won decisions to get the Bears back to within three. Bloom took an 11-8 decision over Kevin LeValley, followed by Fazio shutting out Brantley Hooks, 5-0. Bucknell's Andy Rendos, who has been ranked much of the year, ended the Brown run with a big pin of freshman Kasey McCurdy (Lancaster, OH) with 40 seconds remaining. Bucknell got three more points at 174 when Shane Riccio beat junior Chris Musser (Vestal, NY), 2-0, taking an 18-6 lead.
Again, the Bears clawed back into it with two wins. Gevelinger took a 5-2 decision over David Thompson at 184, followed by Stearns pulling out a narrow 4-3 victory at 197 over Charlie Wonsetler. A pinfall could have tied the match, but junior Zach Zdrada (Atkinson, NH) fell in a close 2-1 match to George Hingson, giving the Bison a 21-12 win.
On Saturday, the Bears will head east to Rutgers, for two more EIWA duals against the Scarlet Knights as well as Franklin & Marshall.
