Schell Goes 4-0 to Lead Bears to Split at Lone Star Duals

Jan. 6, 2008

South Grand Prairie, TX - Senior tri-captain Jeff Schell (Zion Grove, PA) went a perfect 4-0 as the Brown wrestling team (2-2) split four matches at the Lone Star Duals on Saturday. Brown picked up a blowout win over Utah Valley State, 30-10, and a close victory to end the day over Air Force, 19-15, and lost duals against North Carolina, 28-3, and #14 Wisconsin, 34-6. Schell's 13 team points led the Bears, with senior tri-captain Levon Mock (Bangor, MI) right behind at 12 points with two pinfall victories, including the clinching match against Air Force.

In their closest dual of the day, the Bears split the 10 matches evenly with Air Force, but bonus point wins by Schell and Mock proved to be the difference. The Falcons took an early lead with a win at 125, but a 10-1 major decision victory by Schell and decision wins by senior tri-captain Mark Savino (Princeton, NJ) and sophomore Mark Bloom (Manchester, NY) gave Brown the momentum and a 10-3 lead. Air Force rallied, winning four of the next five matches by three or fewer points, as sophomore Bran Crudden (Columbia, CT) picked up an 11-4 win at 174. The Falcons held a 15-13 lead entering the final match at heavyweight, meaning the match would decide the dual, and Mock came through for the Bears, pinning his opponent in the second period.

The Bears' other three matches were all lopsided. Against UNC to start the day, Schell got the only Brown win, a 4-2 decision. However, only one of the losses was for bonus points, as five of the UNC wins were by three or fewer points. Bruno recovered quickly in the next dual, rebounding from a Utah Valley State pin in the opening match at 125 to win eight matches for the big win. Mock closed the dual with a first-period pin, and Crudden earned a pinfall victory of his own at 174 at 6:00.

Against the 14th-ranked Badgers, the Bears faced a lineup that featured five ranked wrestlers. Schell earned a 6-0 decision, with junior Matt Gevelinger (Mineral Point, WI) earning Brown's other victory, a 9-4 decision at 184.

With the dual season officially underway, the Bears will hit the road for three EIWA duals after two weeks of practice, wrestling at Bucknell on Jan. 18 and the following day at Rutgers against the Scarlet Knights and Franklin & Marshall.
