HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Senior Justin Staudenmayer placed sixth in the 157-pound weight class to lead Brown University wrestling at the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Saturday in the second and final day of competition at Sears Centre Arena.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) became a two-time Midlands placer as he finished in fifth place at 157 at the event in 2014. He placed in a tournament for the third time this season. Staudenmayer won the 157-pound weight class at the Navy Classic and came in second at the Bearcat Open earlier this year.
After winning three consecutive matches on Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals, the No. 5 seeded Staudenmayer dropped a trio of bouts to seeded opponents on day two. He fell to No. 1 seed Michael Kemerer of Iowa via technical fall, 19-4, in the semifinals, to No. 11 seed Mike D'Angelo of Princeton, 5-2, in the wrestle-backs, and to No. 3 seed Luke Zilverberg of South Dakota, 5-0, in the fifth-place match.
Junior 165-pounder Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) also advanced to the second day of competition, dropping a narrow 7-6 decision to South Dakota State's Logan Peterson in the wrestle-backs on day two.
In the team standings, Brown ranked tied for 22nd out of 59 teams with 21.5 points in a field that included representation from 19 Power Five schools, including host Northwestern University.
Next, Brown will compete at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday, Jan. 6.
Senior 157-pounder Justin Staudenmayer advanced to the semifinals, and junior 165-pounder Jon Viruet remained in contention for placing to lead Brown University wrestling at day one of the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Friday at the Sears Centre Arena.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) – who placed fifth at 157 at Midlands in 2014 – won all three of his bouts on the first day of competition to ensure himself a top-six finish. Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) claimed a pair of victories to continue competition in the wrestle-backs.
The No. 5 seed at 157, Staudenmayer defeated Minnesota's Carson Brolsma via major decision, 13-2, topped No. 12 seed Jordan Laster of Princeton, 1-0, and beat No. 13 seed Joseph Velliquette of Penn, 6-1, to reach the semifinals.
Viruet, the No. 7 seed at 165, edged Purdue's Mario Levelle, 4-1, and bested Maryland's Brandan Burnham, 6-0, to make the quarterfinals before dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 2 seed Alex Marinelli of Iowa. Earlier this year, Viruet placed fifth at the Bearcat Open.
Five other Bears won bouts on the day with sophomore 149-pounder Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.) leading the way with three wins. He claimed a trio of victories in the wrestle-backs before dropping a major decision to No. 15 seed Kyle Springer of Eastern Michigan.
Freshman 174-pounder AJ Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) gained a pair of wins as the No. 12 seed at 174 while junior heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) claimed two victories at 285 pounds.
