PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling will prepare for the EIWA and NCAA Championships in March with an exciting 2017-18 schedule as the Bears will compete against elite competition in events across the country, head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Wednesday.
"This year, we are adding teams from the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences to our home schedule as well as several tough tournaments in the fall semester," Beckerman said. "We wanted to bring in teams for duals this season that our alumni and fans would get excited to watch."
Highlights from the Bears schedule include trips to the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md., the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., and the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., during the tournament season prior to a dual season that includes home non-conference duals against Stanford and Maryland. Brown will square off with 10 EIWA foes in dual matches, including five Ivy League opponents.
"With the mix of returning and incoming talent, we wanted to bolster our schedule with competition that will help us prepare for the EIWAs and NCAAs in March," Beckerman said.
After an unofficial opening with the Brown & White Wrestle-Offs on Nov. 5, the Bears will compete in the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open at Binghamton (Nov. 12), the Navy Classic (Nov. 18), and the Cliff Keen Invitational (Dec. 1-2) prior to final exams. Brown concludes the tournament portion of its schedule at the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) and the Franklin & Marshall Open (Jan. 6).
The Bears make their official debut at the Pizzitola Sports Center when the team hosts Stanford on Jan. 13 at 1:00 p.m. Brown closes its home-opening weekend with duals against American and Maryland on Jan. 14. The squad then competes in four road duals at Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 20), Bucknell (Jan. 20), Lock Haven (Jan. 21), and Cornell (Jan. 27).
Brown returns to Providence for its Alumni & Family Weekend, hosting Penn (Feb. 3) and Princeton (Feb. 4) with the Bears' dual with the Tigers showcasing the fourth annual Beauty and the Beast Meet with the Brown gymnastics program.
Over the regular season's final two weekends the Bears wrestle at Sacred Heart (Feb. 10), vs. Harvard (Feb. 11), at Hofstra (Feb. 17), and at Columbia (Feb. 17). The program will celebrate Senior Day in the team's home dual against the Crimson.
The 2017 EIWA Championships will take place in Hempstead, N.Y., at Hofstra University from March 3-4. The 2017 NCAA Championships are set for Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio from March 15-17.
