Wrestling Presents Team Awards at Annual Year-End Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling sophomore Jon Viruet earned two awards, including Michael T. Wallace MVP honors, as part of the program's annual year-end awards banquet at the Brown Faculty Club on Saturday night.

"Saturday night was a celebration of all the hard work we put forth this season on the mat and in the classroom," head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We look forward to building on our successes of this year as we prepare for the 2017-18 season."

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) gained the program's Michael T. Wallace Most Valuable Performer Award and the Rob Davidson Most Dedicated Wrestler award while sophomore CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) garnered the team's Most Improved Wrestler award after qualifying for the 2017 NCAA Championships. 

Junior Josh Durso-Finley (Lawrenceville, N.J.) landed the Ralph Anderton-Edward Durgin Award, presented to the wrestler who performed the best under pressure. Senior Richard Muniz (Corona, Calif.) took home the Marvin Wilenzik Award, presented to the wrestler who gave the most back to the community, and sophomore Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) won the Don Van Heest Award, presented to the wrestler who fought back from adversity.

Freshman Jimmy Pawelski (Park Ridge, Ill.) earned the program's Artemis Joukowsky Award for Most Promising Freshman.

The Bears also commended 10 of their wrestlers for achieving a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester and 21 of their student-athletes for posting a GPA of 3.0 or better in the fall.

  • Earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors
  • Placed sixth at 165 lbs. at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4)
  • Led Brown in wins (28), major decisions (eight), dual wins (11), dual EIWA wins (nine), dual points (47), and dual major decisions (four)

Most Improved Wrestler – CJ LaFragola (So., 184 lbs., Little Egg Harbor, N.J.)

  • Qualified for the NCAA Championships (Mar. 16-18) at 184 lbs.
  • Earned Second Team All-Ivy honors
  • Ranked second on the team in wins (24), dual wins (11), dual EIWA wins (eight), and dual points (35)

Ralph Anderton-Edward Durgin Award – Josh Durso-Finley (Jr., 197 lbs., Lawrenceville, N.J.)

  • The Anderton-Durgin Award is presented to the wrestler who performed best under pressure
  • Finished the year with seven wins and a 2-1 dual record
  • Placed second at 197 lbs. at the JWU Wildcat Open (Jan. 29)
  • Won EIWA duals against Harvard (Feb. 10) and Sacred Heart (Feb. 11).

Marvin Wilenzik Award – Richard Muniz (Sr., 165 lbs., Corona, Calif.)

  • The Wilenzik Award is presented to the wrestler who gave the most back to the university
  • Served team as captain
  • Logged the team's fastest pin of the season (0:27)
  • Placed second at 165 lbs. at the JWU Wildcat Open (Jan. 29)

Artemis Joukowsky Award for Most Promising Freshman – Jimmy Pawelski (Fr., 133 lbs., Park Ridge, Ill.)

  • Earned Second Team All-Ivy honors
  • Finished the year 18-15 overall, 6-7 in duals, and 5-4 in EIWA duals
  • Represented Brown at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4)

Don Van Heest Award – Ian Butterbodt (So., 285 lbs., North Andover, Mass.)

  • Presented to the wrestler who fought back from adversity
  • Finished the year 19-13 overall, 8-6 in duals, and 5-5 in EIWA duals
  • Ranked third on the team in wins (19), dual wins (eight), dual EIWA wins (five) and dual points (33)
  • Represented Brown at the EIWA Championships (Mar. 3-4)

Team Captains: Steven Galiardo (Sr., 157 lbs., Chicago, Ill.), Richard Muniz, Michael Russo (Jr., 125 lbs., Jersey City, N.J.), and Jon Viruet

  • Galiardo and Muniz each served as captains for the second straight year
