ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Brown University wrestling sophomore CJ LaFragola dropped a pair of decisions in his debut at the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday at the Scottrade Center to close out the season for the Bears.
A native of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., LaFragola pushed Michael Coleman of Navy in the first round of the wrestle backs before Coleman took a 7-4 win. In the first round, LaFragola dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 16 seed Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan in the round of 32 at 184 lbs.
In the wrestle backs, LaFragola scored a takedown at the 1:20 mark of the first period before Coleman scored an escape 20 seconds later to pull within 2-1 heading to the second period. Coleman tallied an escape early in the second stanza to tie it at 2-2 and notched a takedown to gain a 4-2 edge midway through the period. LaFragola scored back-to-back escapes to pull level at 4-4 with 1:20 remaining, but Coleman countered with a takedown and riding time point to emerge with the 7-4 win.
Making his NCAA debut after gaining an at-large bid, LaFragola wrestled Ellingwood to a scoreless first period. Ellingwood tallied an escape and a takedown in the second frame to pull ahead 3-0 heading into the third period. He added a takedown and a riding time point in the third to finish the 6-0 victory.
