Pfarr, Staudenmayer Pace Wrestling at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore Austin Pfarr and junior Justin Staudenmayer each won two bouts as Brown University wrestling competed against American, No. 20 Pittsburgh, and No. 15 North Carolina at the Pitt Duals at Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday.

In their first dual meet action of the season, the Bears (0-3, 0-1 EIWA) fell to the Eagles (1-1, 0-1 EIWA) out of the EIWA, 21-13, to the host Panthers (8-1) of the ACC, 29-9, and to the Tar Heels (9-1), also out of the ACC, 29-9.

Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio) claimed victories over American and Pitt at 184 lbs. while Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) picked up wins against Pitt and North Carolina at 157 lbs.

Next weekend, Brown continues EIWA dual meet competition at No. 14 Cornell (Sat., Jan. 16, 1 p.m.), at Columbia (Sun., Jan. 17, 1 p.m.), and at Sacred Heart (Sun., Jan. 17, 6 p.m.).

Dual 1: American 21, Brown 13

Freshman Jon Viruet and sophomores Andrew LaBrie and Pfarr won three consecutive bouts to put Brown up 13-12, but American took the final two bouts to pull out a 21-13 victory in the Bears' first meet at the Pitt Duals.

With the Bears facing a 9-0 deficit, junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) defeated American's Tom Page, 11-4, at 197 lbs. to pull Brown within 9-3.

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) began Brown's three-match win streak with a 9-4 win over Mitchell Wightman at 165 lbs. to cut the Bears' deficit to 12-6. LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) followed with a 3-2 win over Jason Grimes at 174 lbs. to bring the score to 12-9.

Pfarr gave the Bears their first lead of the dual with an 11-1 major decision victory over Joe Salvi at 184 lbs., pushing Brown ahead 13-12. The Eagles – who fielded three ranked wrestlers in the meet – then gained the match's final two bouts to secure the team win.

Pfarr won for the second straight dual while Staudenmayer and senior Augustus Marker each picked up a win as Brown fell to host No. 20 Pitt, 29-9.

Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) gained the Bears' first victory of the dual, topping the Panthers' Ronnie Garbinsky at 157 lbs., 2-0.

At 184 lbs., Pfarr won for the second time in as many bouts on the day, defeating Zach Bruce via decision, 6-0. Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) took the next bout of the dual, edging Matt Patrick at 197 lbs., 6-2, to bring Brown within 23-9 of the hosts.

Three ranked wrestlers competed for Pitt in the meet.

Dual 3: No. 15 North Carolina 29, Brown 9

Sophomores Michael Russo and Zeke Salvo won the first two bouts of the dual before Brown dropped a 29-9 decision to No. 15 North Carolina in the Bears' final meet at the Pitt Duals.

Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) opened the dual with a 2-1 victory over the Tar Heels' Anthony Bosco at 125 lbs. to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Salvo captured a 7-5 decision in the next bout at 133 lbs. with a late takedown, beating James Szymanski and pushing Brown's edge to 6-0.

Staudenmayer collected Brown's third win in the dual, shutting out Christian Barber at 157 lbs., 6-0, and pulling the Bears within 11-9 at the midpoint of the match.

Staudenmayer's brother No. 14 John Michael Staudenmayer won at 165 lbs. as the Tar Heels claimed the dual's final five bouts. UNC fielded five ranked wrestlers in the meet.
