ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior Ophir Bernstein and sophomore Justin Staudenmayer each suffered a setback in the wrestle-backs to conclude competition for Brown University wrestling at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center on Friday.
The season ends for both wrestlers who each notched a win in the wrestle-backs on Thursday night.
A native of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Staudenmayer stymied Ohio University's Spartak Chino for much of their bout in the second round of the 157-pound wrestle-backs but dropped a 4-1 decision, with all the scoring occurring in the third period. Both wrestlers chose to start in the neutral position at the start of the second and third frames.
Chino notched the bout's first points on a takedown with 45 seconds left before Staudenmayer earned an escape 15 seconds later. Officials award Chino two points late in the bout as Staudenmayer attempted a headlock with time expiring.
Competing in the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight year, Bernstein (Allen, Texas) lost to 15th-seeded Richard Robertson of Wisconsin, 5-0, in the second round of the 184-pound wrestle-backs. Robertson posted the bout's first points with a takedown 45 seconds into the first period.
Starting on top in the second stanza, Bernstein did not allow a point for Robertson throughout the period to remain within 2-0 heading into the third frame. Bernstein chose the neutral position to start the third before Robertson scored a takedown with 45 seconds left and added a point for riding time.
After the duo's action, the Bears stood in a tie for 44th out of 69 schools in the team standings.
