SAN LUIS OBISPO and BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior Billy Watterson and sophomore Justin Staudenmayer each earned two victories, but Brown University wrestling fell to Cal Poly, 28-11, and CSU Bakersfield, 24-13, on Saturday at the Mott Athletics Center and the Icardo Center respectively.
The Bears (0-2) embarked on the start of the dual meet portion of their schedule with the pair of matches in the Golden State. In the team's earlier meet, the host Mustangs (1-8) picked up their first dual meet win of the season before the Roadrunners (3-2) seized a victory over the visitors later in the day.
Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) both charted a win via decision and a triumph through major decision.
Next, Brown concludes its California swing with a tri-meet at Stanford on Sunday with meets against Menlo College (3:30 p.m. EST) and the host Cardinal (6:30 p.m. EST).
Meet One – Cal Poly 28, Brown 11
Watterson and Marker each claimed major decision victories, and Staudenmayer added a victory by decision, but Brown fell to Cal Poly, 28-11, in its first dual meet of the season.
Watterson defeated Isaac Blackburn by major decision, 13-0, at 125 pounds. In the second period, Watterson earned points on an escape and a takedown in addition to gaining three near fall points on two occasions. He tacked on three near fall points and a point for riding time in the third stanza.
Marker garnered a 13-4 win over JT Goodwin in the 197-pound weight class. He scored a takedown in the first period to hold a 2-0 lead heading into the second. Marker then used an escape, two takedowns, and three near fall points to carry a 10-3 edge into the third period where he registered two near fall points and a riding time point.
Staudenmayer captured Brown's second victory of the day against the Mustangs with a 6-1 win over Colt Shorts at 157 lbs. He took a 2-1 lead after the first period with a takedown and expanded his edge to 5-1 after two frames with a takedown and escape. He logged a point for riding time in the third period.
Meet Two – CSU Bakersfield 24, Brown 13
Watterson and Staudenmayer each tallied his second win on the first day of the Bears' dual meet schedule, but Brown suffered a 24-13 setback to CSU Bakersfield.
Watterson took a 6-4 win over Sergio Mendez at 125 lbs. beginning with a reversal in the first period. In period two he scored another reversal and an escape to go up 5-4 before scoring a riding point in period three.
Staudenmayer staked an 11-3 major decision victory over Spencer Hill at 157 lbs. He recorded a takedown and two near fall points in the first period prior to accruing two escapes, two takedowns, and riding time in the final frame.
Bernstein won his bout in sudden victory fashion, 5-3 over Sean Pollock at 184 pounds. Bernstein took a 3-0 lead with an escape and a takedown in period two before Pollock evened the score at 3-3 after the third period. Bernstein then tallied a takedown in the first overtime stanza.
In the final bout of the day for Brown, Levin charted a 9-5 win over Alex Encarcion in the heavyweight class. Levin recorded four takedowns – one in the first period, two in the second, and one in the third – to go with riding time to garner the victory.
