Beckerman Names Bernstein, Choate, McDonald as Wrestling Captains
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown wrestling Head Coach Todd Beckerman has named junior Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas), senior Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and junior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) as tri-captains for the 2013-14 season, it was announced on Tuesday after a vote by all members of the team.
"The three captains, chosen by their teammates and coaches, are great leaders, on and off the mat," Beckerman said. "Their influence and motivation to excel will help push the team throughout the season."
Bernstein, the Bears' top returner at 184 lbs, highlighted Brown's roster last year with his second NCAA Championship appearance and a silver medal performance at the FILA Junior World Wrestling Championships in Sophia, Bulgaria, this summer. A second team All-Ivy selection, Bernstein represented Israel at the prestigious tournament after a 26-10 regular season record and third-place finish at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships.
Choate is Brown's elder statesman at 149 lbs and topped off his junior campaign with a 14-4 major decision victory at the EIWA Championships. The senior gained national-stage experience as a freshman after qualifying for the NCAA Championships at 133 lbs and will look to pass on that wisdom to his current teammates.
McDonald steps into a captain role after back-to-back appearances at the EIWA Championships in the 174 lbs class. Last season, McDonald competed in 14 matches and picked up dual meet wins against Rhode Island College, Sacred Heart and Boston University. The Nevada native proved he can grapple with nationally-prominent opponents when he picked up a 4-2 win against No. 23 Maryland in last season's dual meet.
Following the team's season-opening intrasquad Brown & White Wrestle-Offs on Nov. 9, the tri-captains will put their leadership in action at the East Stroudsburg Open on Sunday, Nov. 17.
