  • Bernstein Wins Bronze at World University Wrestling Championship

    PECS, HUNGARY – Brown All-American wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) took home a bronze medal in the 86 kg freestyle at the 11th World University Wrestling Championship in Hungary on Wednesday. Representing Israel, Bernstein fell in the opening match to eventual-champion Piotr Ianulov of Moldova but rebounded with two wins in the repechage to tie for third place.

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown wrestling Head Coach Todd Beckerman announced on Monday that his first recruiting class will feature eight freshmen who will join the team for the 2014-15 season. The Bears’ class of 2018 includes: Jimmy Bell (Greenwich, Conn.), Josh Durso-Finley (Lawrenceville, N.J.), Andrew LaBrie (West Greenwich, R.I.), Christian LaBrie (West Greenwich, R.I.), Brendan O’Connor (Dundee, Mich.), Austin Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio), Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) and Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.).

  • Bernstein Finishes NCAA Wrestling Championship in Eighth Place

    OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Twelfth-seeded junior All-American wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) finished in eighth place in the 184-pound weight class after falling 6-1 against sixth-seeded Jacob Swartz of Boise State at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Saturday. Bernstein became the fourth All-American in Brown wrestling history and the first since Tivon Abel in 1998 when he went 1-2 yesterday. He finishes the season with 36 wins, just one/two win/s shy of the Brown single season record set by Steve Thoma in 1991-92.

Bernstein makes his third consecutive trip to the national stage and will open up against unseeded Zack Hernandez of Columbia in first round action on Thursday, March 20.

Bernstein can secure his third straight bid to the NCAA Championships with a semifinal win tomorrow and McDonald can earn his first trip to the national stage by winning out in the consolation bracket.
